4th Research Advisory Committee Meeting– Dec 2015

The UPES Research Advisory Committee meeting was held on 5th December 2015. The external members Dr. Savita - Director of Forest Research Institute, Dehradun, Dr. S.C. Mullick – Emeritus Professor of IIT Delhi in Centre of Energy Studies, Dr. Prasenjit Mondal – Professor IIT Roorkee and Dr. Siddharth S Ray – Senior Scientist and Head of Division Chemical Science in CSIR – IIP Dehradun attended the meeting.

Agenda of RAC meeting was to put forward challenges like Incentivization of researchers who contribute other than the academic responsibilities, consolidation of research activities, in-house lab development, to motivate faculty to do research, increment in the number of dedicated full time Ph.D. students.

The proposed suggestions by the committee members were to have dedicated team of experts which should be developed in-house for thorough reviewing of research proposals for quality and alignment, research product should reach end-market especially communities at large, translational research where the lab based output/technology can be applied to real-world problems and target on demonstration based projects rather than fundamental research to get more coverage and become a preferred institution from the funding agencies point of view should be focused.

It was decided to support researchers with the things like SEED funding.

5th Research Advisory Committee Meeting – 20th June 2016

5th Research Advisory Committee Meeting was organized at UPES with eminent members, Dr. R.K Malhotra - Director General Petroleum Federation of India, Dr. M. O. Garg - Former Director CSIR – IIP, Dehradun, Dr. Ajay Aggarwal - Principal Scientist & Nodal Officer CEERI Pilani, Dr. Rekha Singhal - Head, Department of Food Engineering & Technology ICT Mumbai, Dr. Prashant K Champati Ray - Scientist & Group Head Geosciences & Disaster Management studies group IIRS – ISRO, Dehradun, Prof. Rochish Thaokar - Professor, Department of Chemical Engineering IIT Bombay, Dr. Prabhat Dwivedi - Senior Scientific Officer Nanoscience and Nanotechnology IIT Kanpur, Prof. Prasenjit Mondal - Associate Professor Department of Chemical Engineering IIT Roorkee and researchers of UPES.

Dr. R. K. Malhotra discussed about “Future energy outlook: changing landscape” highlighting the need for promoting research in academic institutions especially in energy sector. Prof. Rochish Thaokar talked about his research on “Applicability of electro-hydrodynamics in drops, vesicles, and capsules including charged vesicles and colloidal electro-kinetics”, Dr. Ajay Aggarwal discussed his research on “Commercialization and the development of nanotechnologies for MEMS based microsensors” and Dr. Rekha Singhal in her talk on “Creating a favorable research environment in universities” emphasized on organizational structure to facilitate research environment and also the importance of research focused on social needs.

RAC members appreciated UPES efforts to develop research culture by providing internal funding to the faculty members to test the feasibility of their research ideas. In this meeting, RAC members put forward challenges like internal evaluation of sanctioned projects, focus on translational research, incentivization of researchers who contribute other than the academic responsibilities, consolidation of research activities, in-house lab development and motivating faculty to do research.

Proposed expert suggestions in the meeting were to increase research efforts in developing clean energy technology, to collaborate with industries in support of R & D expansion and PhD sponsorships, review of Government policies in the energy sector, research focusing on complete and effective utilization of biomass, appraisal to faculty members depending on journal impact factor, citation and quality of their research and academic work, harmony among R & D centers, providing internal assessment by the review committee before submission the research proposals, increase in the number of research fellows, load relaxation to the faculties interested to do further research, assessing the funded project out comes, improving ease of access of infrastructure among R & D centers, more focus on translational research
