First International Seminar on Nanotechnology in Conventional and Alternate Energy Systems: A Global Status and Pathway 2013
The ‘First International Seminar on Nano Technology in Conventional and Alternate Energy Systems, Global Status and Pathways’ events was organized on 12th-13th August, 2013. The seminar was sponsored by Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), Research and Development Centre of Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) and Central Science and Industrial Research (CSIR). A total of about 17 speakers from 4 difference countries and 200 participants from industries, academics institutions, and research organizations all over the country and abroad had attended the Seminar.
During the two days of deliberations the experts in Nano sciences shared their views and concerns in technology and skill development, application of the technology in diverse areas, research and development, technology innovation, technology commercialization, human capital development and technology convergence. The seminar had a unified poster session from all the participants. Posters represented areas like Nano computing; development of photo catalysts, Nano material for high speed water sterilization, Nano Technology in defense and security etc. which attracted the attention of all the participants and guests.
In the valedictory session, the stakeholders derived the fitting conclusion that Government-Industry-Academia interface would be the strongest tool to leverage the benefits of nanotechnology. It was realized that academic institutions and R&D institutions can play a pivotal role in this regard. The distinguished speakers as well as the guests appreciated UPES’s efforts towards the direction of development of human capital in the research and development of Nano technology.
27th National Convention for Aerospace Engineers (NCAE) and National Seminar on “Technological and Engineering Challenges in Indian Aerospace Industry”
The 27th National Convention for Aerospace Engineers National Convention for Aerospace Engineers (NCAE) and National Seminar on “Technological and Engineering Challenges in Indian Aerospace Industry” was jointly organized by University of Petroleum & Energy Studies, Dehradun and “The Institution of Engineers (India)” Uttarakhand State Centre, on 8th and 9th Nov 13 at UPES, Dehradun. Eminent personalities from Aerospace domain honored The 27th NCAE with their presence. It includes Chief Guest Padma Bhushan Dr. V K Saraswat (former scientific advisor to Raksha Mantri and Director General DRDO), Dr. Y V N Krishnamurthy (Director of IIRS), Padma Shri Prof. R M Vasagam (Chariman of the Aerospace Engineering Division Board), Dr. S C Sharma (Professor and former Head, PEC University of Technology), Er. Narendra Singh (Vice President of IEI) and Er. J P Tomar (Chairman, UKSC). The distinguished dignitaries delivered lectures and shared their experiences in the aerospace industry and also discussed the challenges and opportunities in aerospace industry. About 31 Technical papers out of 40 published papers on various sub-themes of convention were presented in technical sessions during the convention.
National Conference on Advances in Material Science for Energy Applications – January 9th – 10th, 2014
This conference was organized by the Physics Department of UPES. It was intended to bring in experts from all over the country to showcase their contributions towards the advances in the science of materials for energy applications. In addition, the conference was also focused on educating people about the usefulness of solar energy and nuclear energy in filling the gigantic gap between the energy production and consumption, and how technology can help in attaining this objective. The conference provided a good platform for young scientists, engineers, research scholars and students to exchange their thoughts and ideas, and to encourage further development of the existing knowledge on energy harvesting. The thrust areas of the conference were:
Materials/techniques for solar energy applications,NAdvances in thin film technology Optically-active nano-structured materials,NAdvances in nanofluids Advanced materials for nuclear energy applications,NAdvances in synthesis and characterization technique
The proceedings of this conference were published as full length peer reviewed papers by internationally-acclaimed Hindawi Publishing Corporation in “Conference Papers in Science” category. There were nine distinguished lectures (keynote, invited, plenary, popular lectures) by renowned academicians and researchers from top academic and research institutions (IITs, IISERs, Central Universities, DRDO, NPL, CSIR, etc.) across the country. More than 50 research papers were presented orally and around 15 posters were displayed during the conference.
DST-SERB School – First of its kind @ UPES
The Science and Engineering Research Body (SERB) of the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and University of Petroleum and Energy Studies Dehradun sponsored the state-of-art six day DST-SERB School on ‘Evolutionary Techniques for the Optimization of Chemical Engineering Systems’, at the University of Petroleum and Energy Studies Campus, Dehradun during March 24th-29th, 2014. This was organized by the Chemical Engineering Department of the College of Engineering Studies under the lead of Dr. Santosh K Gupta and Dr. Vishal Mihsra.
The SERB School covered the fundamentals of classical optimization, evolutionary optimization and global optimization techniques for chemical engineers, using a tutorial approach. In addition, application of these techniques to emerging areas of chemical engineering, e.g., molecular drug design, clustering (pattern recognition), gene network analysis, etc., was also covered.
Techno-Financial Workshop for Solar Light
University of Petroleum and Energy Studies (UPES), Dehradun in collaboration with Center for Management Development (CMD) organized a Training Workshop on Selling Solar Lights: Technology and Finance for 56 participants from 11 different districts of Uttarakhand during the 15th of February, 2014. The workshop was structured under the leadership of Dr. Prasoom Dwivedi and it was a part of an initiative under the project funded by GIZ and Uttarakhand Renewable Energy Development Agency (UREDA) in lieu of technical cooperation between Germany and India to promote private investment in providing access to clean energy in rural areas from renewable energy sources. The aim was to make them learn about the Selco business model, which is based on 03 pillars-customised solutions, door-step financing and strong after sales support.
Expert Sub-Committee Meeting On “Women and Nutrition (WN)” Programme under ‘Science and Technology Scheme for Women’ – June 19th-20th, 2014
Two day Expert Sub-Committee Meeting on ‘Women and Nutrition (WN)’ Programme under ‘Science and Technology Scheme for Women’ was organized by the University of Petroleum and Energy Studies on the 19th and 20th June, 2014. This program was catalyzed and supported by Science for Equity Empowerment and Development (SEED) Division, Department of Science & Technology, New Delhi.
About 31 R&D project proposals were presented for financial assistance before ten member expert evaluation committee, over 2 days. Expert evaluation committee constituted experts invited from research organization/institutes like Nutrition Foundation of India, CSIR-Central Food Technological Research Institute, BAIF Development Research Foundation, National Institute of Nutrition-Jamai Osmania, National Dairy Research Institute, Institute of Bioresources & Sustainable Development, and Division of Pathology, Indian Agricultural Research Institute, PUSA. Dr. (Ms). Mahtab Bamji, INSA honorary scientist was the chair of the committee. Project Investigators/Co-Investigators and project teams from all over India were part of the program. DST officials, Dr. Sobhana Bhaskaran, Scientist E and Dr. Konga Gopi Krishna, Scientist D, from SEED division headed the meeting. Dr. Sanket Goel, Dr. Neelu J. Ahuja, Dr. Kanchan Deoli Bahukhandi and Mr. Venkateswaran. P.S were the chief organizers and coordinators of the meeting, along with team support from Dr. Inder Singh, Mr. Pankaj Badoni, Mr. Ajay Prasad, Mr. Sunil Kumar, Mr. Ritesh Saini, Mr. Kingshuk Srivastava, Yashaswi Vemuganti, Ms. Niharika, Mr. Sunil Bisht and Ms. Shobha Aswal.
AEROKRITI 2014 Summer School-May 20th-28th, 2014
The department of Aerospace Engineering had recently organized the Annual Summer School “AEROKRITI 14” for B.Tech (ASE & ASE+AVE) first year students. It was held during the 20th to 28th of May 2014. The event was inaugurated by Dr. Kamal Bansal (Dean-CoES, UPES), Prof. S.C. Gupta (Associate Dean, UPES) and Dr. Om Prakash (HOD-Aerospace Engineering, UPES). The event was organized by Mr. Arun Jeyaprakash and other faculty members from the Aerospace Department of UPES.
The Workshop had various session including Expert Lectures by Senior Faculties, Fabrication of Aircraft Model, Air Show by the Students (flying the self-fabricated models), Various Competitive Events like Water Rocketry, Para Egger, Air-crash Investigation, Aero Quiz, Quad Rotor Flying, Chuck Glider, etc. The event was aimed to orient the students towards aviation industry for a better understanding of the prospects, challenges and career opportunities in the Aerospace domain. The valedictory session and prize distribution was led by Dr. D. K. Gupta (Head of Petroleum Engineering Department-COES, UPES).
First Learning Visit from Ghana - LEADHER Project – July 2014
As a part of the first learning visit within the LEADHER program; the team from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Ghana visited UPES, Dehradun between 13th July to 20th July 2014. The two visitors were Prof Ahmad Addo, Director, The Energy Center, KNUST and Dr. Emmanuel Wendsongre RAMDE, Chairman, KNUST. The research team visited the 3 Kw water mill nearby the campus (a project assisted by UREDA and owned by a local individual). Later on, the delegation was taken to the UREDA Energy Park to showcase a wide range of renewable energy technology applications for village and urban households. The visitors were also taken to a 3 MW Galogi Hydro-plant near Mussoorie. The energy experts from KNUST and UPES visited various research projects on SPV, CSP applications and Biomass-Solar hybrid system at the National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE), Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Gurgaon. UPES had also arranged a visit to TERI’s Gwalpahari campus to introduce the delegation with the Biomass Gasification technologies and efforts made by TERI in the field of gasification. Finally, the group of both collaborating institutions flew to Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India to visit the SPV installations of Abellon Group of companies. This helped both sides of the party to understand the possible collaborative opportunities in the areas of Nanomaterials for PV, Solar-Hydrogen using electrolysis, Biofuels and Energy Efficiency.
Workshop on RM & Plagiarism Free Research – 9th to 11th Sept. 2014
The workshop on Research Methodology and Plagiarism free Research was organized by the Department of Aerospace Engineering for all the M.Tech students of the First and Second year and a few B.Tech Final year students of COES. This workshop was held at the Vivekananda Auditorium of UPES. The event was aimed to educate students on Research Methodology, Research Paper Writing, Conference and Journal Publications, Thesis Writing at Masters Levels. Prof. S K Gupta (Chemical Engineering), Dr. Sanket Goel (VP R & D), Dr. Shrihari (Campus Director), Dr.Ugur Guven (Professor-Aerospace Engineering), Dr. Om Prakash (HOD-Aerospace Engineering) and Dr. Gurunadh Velidi (Faculty-Aerospace Engineering) were the keynoter speakers.
